March Build Part 1 (2019)

From Pizza Tower Wiki

The March Build Part 1 Patreon Demo is the second Patreon build of Pizza Tower. In addition to the three levels from the previous build, Desert, Mansion and Factory, this build introduces two more levels: Sewer and Freezer. Also here, the idea of several playable characters was tested, and The Noise debuts as a playable character. He's playable in the Freezer level.

Gameplay

This build changes the level selection, and instead of the hub world like seen before, the levels can be accessed via the level select screen. To select a level, the player has to press either or in the level select menu.

There are five levels to choose from, but the objective is the same in each of them: the player, controlling either Peppino Spaghetti or The Noise, has to run through the levels while solving puzzles using transformations foind in that level, and acquire the Tower Secret Treasure, collecting of which will activate Pizza Time. At this point, they have to run back all the way back to the beginning of the level, escape and get their final rank for completing the stage. This rank, however, can't be seen in the level select menu, unlike before.

Optionally, there are five Toppins that can be collected throughout each level (excluding Factory, look at the trivia section for more info). These Toppins, however, do not affect the final rank.

While completing the levels, the player has to mind the amount of health they have left, which is indicated by a sliced pizza graphic in the upper left corner of the screen. If the amount of slices reaches zero, the character will die and fall off the stage. Health can be replenished by collecting pizza slices found throughout the level. However, it is best to play safe: the slices aren't that common to find.

Characters' movesets

Peppino's moveset has stayed relatively the same as in previous builds, however, some changes have been made.

Mach 1

Now, pressing at this speed results in Peppino starting to slide. Before, it was possible only at Mach 2.

Wall climbing

Wall climbing has been re-introduced in this build. At Mach 2 or above, Peppino is able to run up walls. However, he will quickly lose speed and fall off the wall. The faster he runs, the higher he will be able to climb.
If Peppino manages to climb onto a wall, he will continue running at the speed he had before he started climbing, regardless of how much speed he lost while on the wall.
It is possible to perform a walljump and continue running at Mach 2. However, if there is another wall close enough for Peppino to reach, he will start climbing that wall, allowing him to climb walls of any height.

Grab

This ability is a properly implemented version of the grab from the Christmas Race build. It replaces the slap ability from previous builds. Pressing will allow Peppino to make a grab move into the direction he is facing. If he reaches an enemy while grabbing, he will pick it up and can throw it by the player pressing a directional key, as well as — this will make Peppino jump before piledriving the enemy into the ground.
Pressing before jumping will allow Peppino to do a long jump. If is held while landing after the long jump, Peppino will go directly into Mach 2.

Grabbing can also destroy breakable blocks, but only one at a time.

The new character introduced in this build, The Noise has his own moveset. Although it is similar to Peppino's, there are still a number of differences.

Mach run

The Noise can ride his skateboard at different speeds, speeding up while is pressed.

Mach 1
This is the first and the slowest speed at which The Noise can go. While at Mach 1, The Noise can stun one enemy at a time and destroy breakable blocks, also one at a time, by slamming them with his helmet. Pressing at this speed results in The Noise starting to slide.

Mach 2
The speed to which The Noise gets after skating at Mach 1 for a while, as well as the final speed he can reach. At this speed, The Noise is able to kill Cheeseslimes, stun enemies and destroy breakable blocks while sckating. At this speed, he can also wallrun.

Jumping

If the player presses , The Noise will jump. He can jump in any state except sliding. The quicker The Noise skates, the farther he can jump.
If is held while The Noise jumps on an enemy, his jump will be higher.
Pressing before jumping will let The Noise to jump into a small elevated hole.
It is possible to perform a walljump. While skating up a wall, pressing will make The Noise jump from the wall and continue skating at Mach 2.

Wall climbing

At Mach 2, The Noise is able to skate up walls. However, he will quickly lose speed and fall off the wall.
If The Noise manages to climb onto a wall, he will continue skating at Mach 2, regardless of how much speed he lost while climbing the wall.
It is possible to perform a walljump and continue skating at Mach 2. However, if there is another wall close enough for The Noise to reach, he will start climbing that wall, allowing him to climb walls of any height.

Crawling

Pressing will make The Noise duck or move by crawling. This allows him to fit into smaller gaps.
If is pressed at Mach 2, The Noise will begin sliding. Sliding is faster than crawling, but makes The Noise lose speed until he's back at his default speed, which will force him back into crawling. Standing up while sliding lets The Noise continue skating at Mach 2, regardless of how much speed he lost while sliding.

Grab

Pressing will allow The Noise to make a grab move into the direction he is facing. If he reaches an enemy while grabbing, he will pick it up and can throw it by the player pressing a directional key, as well as — this will make The Noise jump before dunking the enemy into the ground.
Pressing before jumping will allow The Noise to do a long jump. If is held while landing after the long jump, The Noise will go directly into Mach 2.
Grabbing can also destroy breakable blocks, but only one at a time.

Gliding

Pressing while in the air allows The Noise to use his cape for gliding through the air. This will make him fall slower while is held. Releasing the key will make him fall at the normal speed.

While gliding, The Noise retains the speed he had while jumping. Thus, the faster he skates, the farther he can glide.

Levels

There are five levels that can be selected from the level select:

Mechanics

Transformations

With the addition of a new playable character came a new transformation. The Washing Machine is a transformation unique for The Noise, and it's the remedy for him being unable to reach Mach 3. While riding the washing machine, he is able to break metal blocks.

Gimmicks

These gimmicks, all found in Sewer, make their debut in this build:

Enemies

The enemies that first appear in this build are:

Minor differences

The game, at this state, is still majorly different from the final release in every aspect of it, including the minor things, from the title screen to sound design. While these changes are grand in comparison to the final game, they are still minor when comapred to the build prior to this one, the The January 2019 Patreon Demo.

First changes come to the very beginning of the game, the title screen. Here, not much has changed visually, except Peppino, who has been moved leftward from the middle of the screen. The noticeable, and upsetting, thing is the removal of the ability to choose a different color pallete for Peppino, leaving him only wearing white throughout the entirety of the build.

Selecting levels has also changed. Like stated above, the hub area, although humble, has been completely removed in favor of a simple level select screen. On this screen, the player's ranks for previous playthoughs can't be seen, meaning they can't see how well they've done or even which levels they have or haven't played yet.

As for sound design, it hasn't changed since the last build. The newly added enemies and gimmicks either use already existing sounds, or have no sound at all, like the Washing Machine jumping.

The Time's Up screen has received a slight tweak to its timing: it now plays slightly slower than in the previous build. However, it is still faster than the final release's version. In this build, it lacks sound design.

Bugs

Here is the list of unintentional errors and bugs present in this build:

Rebinding Bug
There is a bug with rebinding keys, where, if binding a move to the same key that already has a default binding (, for example), the default move will not be reset, and both of the moves will be performed, with the default move taking priority. For example, if rebinding to dashing and later pressing it, the character will jump first and, if the key is still held upon landing, only then will begin dashing.

Jumping Up Slopes Bug
Going up a slope while riding a washing machine as The Noise will create multiple jump particles.
The same bug can be seen when Peppino jumps on a slope while running at Mach 3, however, in his case, the jump sound will play multiple times. The jump particles may sometimes not appear at all, or appear multiple times.

Sausage Missing
In Factory, the sausage Toppin is missing, making the player unable to collect all toppins.

John Blocks Overlayed
In Sewer, in the room with the mushroom Toppin, there are two John blocks layered on top of each other. They are located in the wall to the right of the entrance to this room, and can only be identified during Pizza Time, while they are transparent.

Piledriver Bug
Piledriving any enemy will kill them regardless of how many hit pontis they have. This is most certainly unintentional, since piledriving is so strong that using it on Greaseball will count as him being thrown into the basketball hoop.

Pizza Coins
Despite being unused, the Pizza Coin counter is still present in the pause menu, similarly to the previous build.

Trivia

This section is dedicated to trivia and miscellaneous information about March Build Part 1 (2019).
Remember to read the wiki's trivia guidelines before adding trivia or making changes.
  • This build doesn't use the escape background for Sewer despite it being in the files.
  • The font is more spaced out than in previous builds.
  • While the Washing Machine transformation was scrapped from the final release, it has a small cameo in the secret "Wash n' Clean" room.
